Engaged in Boston: Cathie & Kevin

I got up verrrry early last week to photograph Cathie and Kevin’s engagement session in the Back Bay area of Boston. When I say “early,” I mean that I left the house at 6:00 a.m. Whew! They were nice enough to meet me at the Public Gardens with a Starbucks.:)

Cathie and Kevin’s wedding will take place in March 2011 at the W Hotel in Boston.

Heidi & John: Engaged in Boston

The other day I photographed Heidi and John in Boston’s Beacon Hill area and the Boston Public Garden. Heidi and John are actually one of my 2011 couples, and they’ll be married at the beautiful Belle Mer in Newport. I’m also so, so excited that they’re having Stillmotion as their videographer. If you like to cry while watching wedding videos, head over to their site!

I got some wonderful shots of Heidi and John, but unfortunately our photo session was cut short by an accident. As I was backing up to take the photo of them on the bench (below), I didn’t realize that there was an empty water fountain behind me with a rising wall and then a three foot drop. How many times have I backed up to get a shot and stepped off a curb or into a puddle? Lots of times. I always think “ooh, I’ll have to be more careful.” This time I backed into something more dangerous and ended up flipping backwards and falling on my back and hitting my head. I was basically fine — sore and stunned — but fine. I consider myself incredibly lucky that the fall wasn’t worse, and from now on I’m going to be MUCH more careful and aware of my surroundings while shooting. So to all my photographer friends, PLEASE be careful when you’re photographing, and please always try to be aware of your surroundings. Never get so carried away with making a photograph that you don’t know where your next step is going to land you. It’s hard because while we’re photographing we’re using our eyes and mind for something else, not to pay attention to our own safety. Anyway, we did get some beautiful photographs that day… oh, and my two Canon 5Ds and attached lenses (which also fell) turned out fine too.:)

Robyn + Justin: Engaged in Boston

A few favorites from Robyn and Justin’s engagement session in the Boston Public Garden. You’ll see them back here on the blog next year, when they’ll have their wedding at Belle Mer in Newport, RI.

Vinh + Lik Fun's Wedding at the Langham Hotel, Boston

Vinh and Lik Fun found me through flickr, a photo sharing site I’ve been using for the past few years. I started my flickr page in 2006, before I decided to become a wedding photographer. As I was going through my flickr stream recently, it was fun to see how my work has progressed over the past three years. I think I even have some drawings posted on there that I did in high school!

Although Vinh and Lik Fun had around 100 guests at their wedding, they wanted a second photographer. See, they’re my kind of clients — they’re really into photographs. So I want to thank my second photographer and assistant on this assignment, Cait Robbins. She took some awesome photos that I’ll be adding to this wedding collection.

Incidentally, this was the fourth tea ceremony that I’ve photographed in the past few weeks! Until this year I had never even been to a tea ceremony, but I have to say I enjoy the tradition. I feel like I’m getting to be a pro at photographing tea ceremonies! I was at a wedding recently and someone said “I’m not really sure how we do this” and I almost had to stop myself from stepping in!:)
