Weekend in NYC

Peter and I spent the weekend in NYC. We pretty much spent the whole time on the Lower East Side: stayed at the Thompson LES, ate dinner at Congee Village, and Peter performed two nights at the Bowery Ballroom. Even though it was possibly the coldest weekend yet this winter, we had a fabulous time!

Whenever I go on “vacation,” I rarely photograph as much as I’d like. I’m too busy living in the moment, which is hard to do when you’re trying to document moments. Anyway, here are a few photos from this weekend. Check out our room at the Thompson LES — with floor to ceiling windows it was amazing! We booked it through Tablet, which I highly recommend for great deals on funky hotels.

A Slideshow: Ed & Nina, Eloped in New York City

A few weeks ago I wrote about my friends Ed and Nina’s elopement in NYC. That post received more comments than anything I’ve ever published on the blog! So to follow up, I thought I’d share their slideshow.

This is the only client slideshow where I’ve ever made a cameo appearance. I don’t normally do that, but Ed and Nina are friends. Their wedding was just me, Ed, Nina, and Oscar: Ed’s 96-year-old godfather who was also best man at Ed’s parents’ wedding in 1970. Oh, and check out all of the other couples getting married at New York City Hall. I love it!

Ed + Nina: ELOPED in New York City!

People sometimes ask about my favorite places to photograph weddings, and I always say the same thing: it doesn’t matter where. For me, photography is about people. My best photographs often have nothing to do with how much money was spent or how much time and effort went into planning details.

When my friend Ed announced that he had met the love of his life and a few months later that they were eloping to New York City, I was skeptical. But then I met Nina, and I could see what he saw, and knowing Ed I knew what she saw in him. They were, I had to admit, perfect for each other. So I jumped on the bandwagon.

I had a lot of responsibility taking these photographs. These photos would be an important way that their families and friends could experience and share their wedding. I’m so happy that they decided to make me part of their day!

We then picked up Oscar in Brooklyn. At 96, Oscar is such an inspiration! He was the witness for the wedding.

Almost 39  years ago Oscar also served as best man at Ed’s parents wedding. Below, December 19, 1970: Oscar, Ed’s parents, and Ed’s aunt Leslie.
