Am & Ken’s Harvard Sq. Engagement

A few days before Christmas, I met Am and Ken in Harvard Sq. to take their engagement photos. The winter setting was fitting, since their wedding is next December at the Boston Public Library.

I spend a lot of time in Harvard Sq. I not only photograph here, but it’s also where I meet with clients, shop, drink coffee, order takeout, and hang out with friends. Sometimes when I’m in Harvard Sq. I think about my first visit there and how it helped change my life.

When I was 15, I wasn’t doing so well in school. I was lazy and a bad student. All I wanted to do was socialize. My biggest goals were to dress like Madonna and get grades that were just good enough to graduate from high school. And graduating was in question since my grade point average was a 1.6! Needless to say, my parents and teachers didn’t know what to do with me.

I had spent my entire life in Fall River, Massachusetts. Going to Boston, which was only an hour away, was a big deal and I had only been there a handful of times. So one Saturday my friend Christine’s parents said that they would take us to Boston to see a jazz show. I wasn’t interested in jazz but I wanted to go to Boston, where I could possibly have adventures and discover new ways of goofing off.

The concert was at Harvard’s Sanders Theatre. It was Jerry Mulligan performing with the Harvard student jazz band. As soon as the music started I was mesmerized — mostly by the audience. There were people dressed all in black and women with big earrings and guys in berets and everyone was just bopping their heads to the music. We didn’t have anything like this in Fall River! After the show we walked around Harvard Sq. There were kids on skateboards, girls with pink hair, old hippies, street musicians, Buddhist monks, and professor-types wearing tweed jackets. And everywhere you looked, there were young people and college kids. “This place is nuts!” I thought. “I’ve got to get back here!”

The next day, back in Fall River, I proclaimed to my mother “I want to go to college. I want to go to Harvard.” She laughed a bit about the Harvard part, since my grades had ruled out any chance of that. But she was happy that I was thinking about college and she reminded me that it still wasn’t too late for me to turn things around. During those next few years of high school, my mind would often go back to Harvard Sq. When I had to study for a test or do homework, I’d remember what I’d seen in Cambridge, and realize how badly I wanted to go to college and get to a place where people went to concerts and bopped their heads and seemed to be part of a bigger, crazier, vibrant world.

Today, I live down the street from Harvard Sq. Sometimes when I’m there meeting with clients, or photographing an engagement session like Am and Ken’s, I think back to that first night here with Christine and her parents. And I’m so happy — I can hardly believe — that I made it back to Harvard Sq.

Meghan + Keith: Boston Engagement Photography

I’m a little behind with my blog posts. Not for lack of photographic activity, but because I’ve been doing so much photographing! I’ve been shooting and processing and meeting with clients every day. Yes I’ll admit I get a little tired working 15 hours a day, but it has been so worth it. Starting my own business, doing what I love, and meeting nice people like Meghan and Keith.

I spent a Saturday morning photographing Meghan and Keith in Marblehead, Mass. “Old Town” Marblehead has so much early American history, it seemed an appropriate place to be on the 4th of July. I am so, so excited to photograph their wedding at Star of the Sea and Hamilton Hall in Marblehead and Salem this September.

Engaged: Lauren + Jeff

I have lived in Boston for three years, and half the time I still have no idea where I am. Seriously I could be near a place I’ve been to five times and still be surprised when I see it looming a few blocks away. “We’re near the ICA? That’s where we are?” Boston is ridiculously easy to get lost in. So last Friday when I met Lauren and Jeff at  South Station for their engagement shoot, I confessed right off that I pretty much had no idea where I was and that they could take the lead as far as directing us to different locations on our photo walk.

Where did we photograph? Beats me. I think we were somewhere near the ICA because I saw it in the distance at one point. Oh and there was a little grassy spot in front of what might have been a public building… there was a river… and I think I saw the edge of Chinatown. Anyway it didn’t really matter in the end because I love how their photos came out!

Why We Do Engagement Photography

It’s a good question. Why are we taking these photos? Often one partner gets it into their head that it would be a “great idea” to take some engagement photos, and then has to convince the other person that they should do it. And usually, I find that the person who hatches the idea is often the partner that chose the photographer or places a higher importance on the wedding photography.

So what’s the value of engagement photography? There are tons of good reasons to take engagement photographs. First of all, it’s FUN. It’s fun to pose for the camera, and it’s fun to laugh at yourself and say “I can’t believe I’m doing this” and it’s fun when you finally see the photos and realize that you look pretty darned good. And I do consider that a part of my job — making people look good. With engagement photos especially, this is not about “reality” and photojournalism. This is better than your everyday life. For me, engagement photography is about the dream. I crack up when people occasionally ask me about my “models.” I’m like “models?” “Yeah, those people on your site. You hire models, right?” These are real-people — my clients! But if I’ve helped them to feel or look like a model then that’s great!:)

You can also put engagement photos to good use. They’re great for save-the-date cards. And that online slideshow with music makes a nice email announcement to get people excited about your upcoming wedding. Some people use the photos to create guest sign-in books, or have a print or two framed and displayed at their wedding, or even put them in a wedding day slideshow.

An engagement photography session is also a great way to get to know your photographer better and get comfortable in front of a camera. For me, it’s often about building relationships with my clients.

But what’s best about engagement photography is that you don’t have to be engaged to schedule a session. Anniversaries, birthdays, or just because you feel like it — you really don’t need a reason other than wanting to have some fun and take some great photographs.
