Mabel & Olive

Amy (of Amy & David, Willowdale Estate), recently asked if I would photograph her kitties, Mabel and Olive, as a surprise Valentine’s gift for David. You might remember the cake topper from their wedding photos — it included likenesses of these kitties!

For me, portraits and people are the most interesting aspect of photography. And while they’re not people, I feel like animals are sort of like, little people. They’re little souls who wear fur costumes. They deserve portraits too! Portraits that convey their beauty and personalities. I love animals so much. If I hadn’t been a writer (done) or a photographer (doing it now), my other dream job would be veterinarian.

When Amy told me that Olive (the black tortoise shell) was extremely shy, I immediately wanted to see if I could connect with her. Does that sound silly? “Connecting” with a cat? So I put on my coaxing, shy kitty voice and demeanor, which I have to use all the time with my own very shy rescue cat, Iris. A few minutes into our photo session and Olive was rolling around and really became quite the little show-off model. Mabel is umm… outgoing. Watch your hands and sleeves because she’s coming to getcha!

Dan + Li on Her Birthday

I spent Saturday afternoon photographing Li and her husband Dan. It was Li’s birthday, and she wanted to have a fun photo shoot to celebrate.

Li, a.k.a. “Fat Orange Cat Studio”, is a friend and bar-none the best pet photographer in Boston. Her photos of critters are a-mazing. Li is also my first go-to person as a second shooter at weddings, and even started a wedding photography arm of Fat Orange Cat Studio.

Saturday was the eve of the blizzard, and Boston was eerily quiet for our photo shoot. I guess people would rather be at the supermarket or hunkering down at home, rather than hanging out in cemeteries and drinking on Newbury St! Hey more space for us, and fewer people to see us acting silly on our photo shoot!

Now, some people may question a romantic photo shoot in a cemetery. But I love cemeteries! I’m not goth or anything, I just like history. Li suggested doing part of our shoot at Boston’s Granary Burial Ground, the final resting place of Paul Revere, John Hancock, Mother Goose, and Sam Adams. It was cold and quiet and really quite beautiful.

Adoption Day

Nicoline's Yoga Portraits

A few professional portraits of Nicoline. I created two sets: one in color and one in black and white. Now, usually I prefer color photographs. But for some reason I really like seeing these images in black and white. Maybe it’s the simplicity of subject/environment and the simplicity of black and white.

I also recently photographed Nicoline and Ryan’s wedding.

Mission of Burma at Q Division

I took some photos of Mission of Burma at Q Division during mixing sessions for their new album. The posed photos kind of make me laugh… which I guess is appropriate because they are all really funny people. I love Bob with the Verizon phonebooks and Peter crawling toward me. Roger had the idea that we take photos with their bikes. In the spirit of full disclosure I should mention that Peter is my significant other.
